AARON'S WAIVER WIRE PICKUPS - WEEK 3

Jerick McKinnon- San Francisco 49ers RB

Jerick McKinnon is the next man up in the backfield for one of the league’s best rushing attacks, and after an injury filled Week 2, there aren’t many better options. With Tevin Coleman slated to miss multiple games and Raheem Mostert already listed as doubtful for Week 3, McKinnon appears to be the main running back and passing down back for a run heavy team. The matchup against the Giants, a bottom 10 rushing defense, only makes McKinnon that much more intriguing. I think the game will be closer than expected due to the injuries on both sides of the ball for the 49ers and with Saquon Barkley being ruled out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL for the Giants. With a rostered percentage of just 16.1 in ESPN leagues going into Monday night, I think Jerick McKinnon is a must add going into Week 3.

Joshua Kelley- Los Angeles Chargers RB

Not often will you catch me writing about the #2 RB in a backfield, but these are the weird times we find ourselves in for 2020. Joshua Kelley has secured his role in the run heavy Chargers offense and while it’s behind last year’s surprise #6 overall RB Austin Ekeler, we know what he brings to the table. The Chargers are 7th in the league in total offensive yards and 6th in rushing yards, while also ranking first in rushing attempts. The Chargers want to run the ball and have confidence in both Ekeler and Kelley as shown by them receiving the exact same number of rushes despite the 62% and 38% snap count respectively. Kelley has shown a downhill running style that proves effective to earning him consistent touches and is something I believe will continue throughout the year. To go along with a run heavy offense, the Chargers are not the type of team that will be blowing anyone out which will lead to more run effective game scripts that should see Kelley, who’s rostered in 11.4% of leagues as of Monday, continue to earn carries.
